I am a self-taught artist who loves and appreciates art and photography. Both capture moments of life with great meaning and beauty.

A photo or a piece of art can set off all kinds of emotions. I believe that looking at paintings and images can promote healing too, a form of colour therapy.

Anyway, I hope my vision of my time on this planet can give you all some form of joy.

Equipoise

I bet you think I have swallowed a dictionary. Well you are not that far off. I am experimenting with words to help me name my paintings. It is quite fun to do actually. I think of a letter and then look at words beginning with that letter that best describe the feeling of my painting. It helps me in naming the paintings and improves my vocabulary too, not bad, my art is helping to improve my English.

The painting shows a background where the colours are merging and mixing they look similar to lava or swirling winds on the planet Jupiter. They look a little chaotic. In front of the background you have an image which shows strength and form something dependable that fixes your eye. You feel protected and secure. If you put them together you have the perfect balance 'Equipoise'. Rather like Yin and Yang, Male and Female, Light and Dark. They complement each other and harmonise.

So here are the different stages of my painting. I called it 'EQUIPOISE'. The size is 16.5" x 11.5", acrylic on canvas.

Solace

I had two heavenly weeks off work where I painted to my heart's content. I have not had much time to paint for a while and craved it so much it's not even funny. I felt incomplete and envied anyone with a brush in their hands, including the pupils I support at work. I just wanted to take the paint brush and sit in a corner swishing it around on a piece of paper. You see for me, painting is not only my creative outlet, but also my place of 'Solace'. It is where I go to find myself and exercise my right brain. As we all know this world promotes too much of the left brain thinking and not enough right.

I started this painting using bright orange, yellow and blue. I poured the paints as though I was pouring my heart and soul out onto the canvas waiting for some kind of answer. I did not know what I was doing. I just wanted to get the paints out and see the colours merging into one another. The result is here, the first layer. I then went back a couple of times and changed the mood by adding other colours, white, red... somehow it just felt as though it was incomplete. After a few days I went back to it and decided to cool the colours down and add more blue. This was when I could visualise the painting. The colours reminded me of beautiful sunsets I have seen and experienced. That's it I would paint a silhouette of a place where one would go to be alone and collect their thoughts, a place of Solace, which is also the name of the painting.

Here is the final piece. I hope you enjoy it. It is acrylic on canvas, size: 420mm x 297mm, or A3.

As a treat I have put a link here for you to listen to a song called 'Solace' by Fyfe, a lovely song  complemented by a very artistic video.

Keep smiling

Samira :)
